New York Times best-selling author Kris Carr teamed up with Chef Chad Sarno to bring us 150 awesome vegan recipes and the 411 on how to eat plant-based to maximize health and happiness. One of their objectives, to create foods that are a party for your taste buds, a New Year’s Eve worthy celebration. Speaking of New Year’s Eve, with the holidays coming up, this plant-based cookbook
Crazy Sexy Kitchen: 150 Plant-Empowered Recipes to Ignite a Mouthwatering Revolution contains lots of great recipes that will WOW your friends and family.
Kris and Chad gave a combination presentation/cooking demo and book signing at Whole Foods in New York City a couple weeks ago. They served up samples of of some of their delicious creations from the cookbook, including For the Love of Nog, made with homemade almond milk, which by the way is super easy to make (wait for it, video coming soon! So psyched to show you how easy peasy this is, for reals). Then there was the Wild Mushroom Croquettes with Horshradish Cream and a delicious kale salad. Had seconds of the croquettes, thirds and fourths of the kale salad, and maybe even fifths and sixths of the nog, I lost track.
If you’re familiar with Kris Carr you know that anything she touches if full of inspiration and sass. Her own struggles and triumph from illness to thriving health and wellness, she shares candidly. You are at once drawn in.
Whether you’re a novice in the kitchen or an experienced cook, there’s something for everyone.
She talks about her philosophy and the vegan lifestyle, the health and nutrition aspects, breaks down the ‘how-to’ in preparing delicious plant-based foods.
Crazy Sexy Kitchen covers all the bases including the techniques you need to know for example, caramelizing, deglazing, dehydrating, and dredging, yes dredging, a new word for me too. The term means the coating of food, for example using flour, breadcrumbs or cornmeal to coat sliced eggplant or a seitan cutlet, then pan-frying. The point is, you get crazy sexy tips and techniques you can use to create satisfying, nourishing foods.
Some extra special features include the recipes contributed from other outstanding chefs, some of those include vegan pastry chef Fran Costigan (she makes some of the best desserts you’ll ever have), chef Sarma Melngailis (co-founder of the outrageously fantastic raw vegan NYC restaurant Pure Food and Wine. Any trip to NYC must include a stop at Pure). Other contributors include celebrity chef Tal Ronnen (catered Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi’s wedding and took on a big role preparing vegan meals for Oprah Winfey’s 21-day vegan cleanse), then there’s the dream team from NYC vegan restaurant Candle 79, Joy Pierson, chef Angel Ramos and chef Jorge Pineda.
The pictures tell a story too. Of course there are the mouthwatering food photos but there are pictures of people, Kris and Chad in the kitchen juicing and at a farm sanctuary with the rescued farm animals. You’ll feel like you’re right there with them, taking in a deep breath of country-fresh air on the journey towards greater health and well-being.
For me a cookbook without amazing photos just doesn’t motivate me. The pictures of the foods in
Crazy Sexy Kitchen are succulent and a feast for the eyes. There are so many of them and they appear next to the recipe, no hopscotching around to find them. It’s just a beautiful book too. From the quality of the glossy pages to the graphics and all the photos, this is an engaging cookbook that makes for a wonderful presentation as a gift for the holidays or any occasion. And for the food and recipes and content to be fabulous too, well now you have it, a winner of a cookbook.
Many thanks to Hay House for providing me with a copy of Crazy Sexy Kitchen to review. My goal is always to provide an honest review and I can honestly tell you, this cookbook delivers.
It seems I’m in good company, and not just in this photo sandwiched between Kris and Chad. Co-founder and CEO of Whole Foods Market, John Mackey, celebrates the book as well “I can’t think of a better team than Kris Carr and Chad Sarno. Kris is a wellness trailblazer. She has inspired countless people to take charge of their health and vastly improve their lives. Chad is a culinary master who has been an integral part of the healthy eating program at Whole Foods Market. His recipes are simple and totally delicious. I hope you enjoy this book and all its powerful wisdom as much as I do.”
