In April 2012 we celebrated Earth Day at the Green Festival in NYC. While there, I had the pleasure of meeting the Alive & Radiant Foods founder, Blessing. Blessing was one of many kale chip makers at the festival.
Alive and Radiant Foods has the most unique, exotic and delicious flavors of any brand out there. With 8 flavors to choose from you’re sure to find one or two or 8 favorites (ah, sometimes I just can’t choose). There’s Alive and Radiant Foods Kale Krunch
Spirulina Orange Creamsicle,
Hibiscus & Pink Peppercorn,
Chokalet Chip and
At the Green Festival we got to taste all of them and actually my stand out favorites were Quite Cheesy, Southwest Ranch and Chocolate.
Here’s our interview with Blessing from Alive and Radiant Foods. It was truly a blessing to get to meet her. True to her brand, she really is most alive and radiant. You can read our interview here or watch the video below.
Why kale? What got you into making kale chips?
Well you know it really came out in meditation. I was in meditation one night and I had a friend of mine who was a raw food person for 40 years introduce me to the idea of putting anything that you have into your dehydrator when its about to go off. One night I was at her house and she gave me kale and I went, “I hate this stuff” and I fell in love with kale with olive oil, maple syrup, a little bit of basil, it was like a pesto. It was awesome.
Came back to the west coast and started making my own versions and finally in 2008 the spirit in meditation said, you gotta put them on the market. And so it is, there goes the story and it’s been a revolution ever since.
You have so many different flavors that are all so amazing…chocolate kale!
Chocolate kale, our super food kale. I was asked to do it by Whole Foods. I thought it was weird, disgusting, would have stuck my tongue out, put my finger in my mouth, said “yuck, yuck, yuck,” but I said I’ll do it anyway because you’re asking me. I started doing it with my developer and after 3 months we came up with a version that both of us can’t stop eating. We were blessed. It’s a blessing.
So you’re vegan, raw vegan?
I’ve been predominantly vegan, a raw vegan. I’m about 90% but I don’t say anything strict because that doesn’t work for me.
What inspired you to get into the vegan lifestyle?
You know I really can’t remember how long ago it started, it started that long ago. And sometimes I have a little slip here and there when I’m not taking my proper nutrition, my vitamins. It really started when I got conscious. I don’t know how else to say it. When I woke up and left corporate America and started a real life I was able to stop eating meat. I became a vegetarian the day after I left corporate America and it’s been a journey. Every year I gave up something else.
So it was about a healthier lifestyle.
It was about a helather lifestyle and it was also about consciousness…Every time I started getting into deeper levels of cleansing my body the more awareness I had. The closer I felt connected to the earth.
Speaking of the earth, we’re here, it’s Earth day, Earth week, what do you think about Earth day? What can people do to make it a better place? If somebody’s not vegan or not really aware of some of these things? Other than eating your chips and eating more kale…
For me, I think one of the greatest things that creates awareness is actually getting out every day and taking a walk. Not walking blindly and not walking as if you’re a dead person walking …but really looking and seeing what’s in front of you. Looking at the trees and looking at the sky and looking at nature and really realizing that you’re a part of that gigantic eco-system and that you’re not separated from it. Just to stop and take your iPhone and take a picture of a flower and look at the flower and look at the inside of the flower, just communicate and commune with nature. To me, that’s the greatest thing to wake somebody up.
That’s a beautiful thing – breathing and taking it all in.
Breathing, yes breathing…before you take the walk start breathing. Hello!
Especially in NYC we need to breathe a lot more and go to California and visit you.
Everybody come and visit me…but really and truly it’s true, when you take that first breath in the morning, realize what a gift it is to even take a breath. Some people are no longer here to take a breath and literally many people can’t take a breathe anymore on their own. To be able to actually wake up and have arms and legs, a body, a breath. If we don’t live in the thanksgiving of who we are, as just humans, why are we here? I mean we’re here to have an experience, to celebrate the body. We’re humans, enjoy the experience.
I love that, live in the thanksgiving of who we are. That’s beautiful. So where can people buy your kale chips?
They can buy our kale chips, well in NYC they can buy our kale chips at High Vibe which is an amazing raw foods store and vitamin supplement place. There are many other places. There’s Lifetime and Health Nuts there’s lots of other places…you can go online, go to
Amazon, we also have our own website.
