Vegan celebrity, singer and songwriter Nellie McKay was at the great Cipriani Ballroom to celebrate Farm Sanctuary’s 25th anniversary. We had a chance to talk with her on the red carpet about vegan food and farm animal rights issues. You can watch the full interview below.
She’s been a big supporter of Farm Sanctuary and all the great work they do.
“Farm animals are, just by their sheer number, are the worst treated in this country and around the world. If people didn’t eat animals they couldn’t justify all the other stuff they do to them. It’s because it’s so emotional for us, that food. It’s much more than sustenance.”
She’s been vegan for seven years and still struggles sometimes.
“We need more cheap crappy vegan places that are open at 4am…I’d like more vegan food in diners. I’d love to have a mock grilled cheese sandwich and fries. I mean that’s the food I grew up on.”
I mentioned a couple places, Foodswings in Brooklyn and Sticky Fingers Bakery in DC but there are so many more. Pala in NYC on the lower east side is great for delicious vegan pizza. Pizza seems to be a big issue for her and a good vegan pizza with Daiya cheese would satisfy her need for pizza for sure.
If you have a favorite restaurant, diner, cafe or bar that serves good vegan junk food, please comment here and let’s help her struggle less.
