Interview with Maya Gottfried About Her Children’s Book Our Farm: By the Animals of Farm Sanctuary – – Video Interview

by Sharon Nazarian - Big City Vegan on January 18, 2011

Maya Gottfried is the author of Our Farm: By the Animals of Farm Sanctuary, a children’s book that celebrates the lives of farm animals.  The book was inspired by Maya’s experiences from her many visits to Farm Sanctuary’s shelter in upstate NY.  Farm Sanctuary is a farm animal rescue and protection non-profit organization with shelters in New York and California.

This past Sunday, she collaborated with dancer Cynthia King and musician Michael Harren to create an interactive celebration of farm animals for children.  Held at the Cynthia King Dance Studio in Brooklyn children listened to Maya read poems from her book while Cynthia led the children in interpretive dances movements.  The kids danced like rabbits, chickens and ladybugs.

Maya’s charming book contains poems written from the farm animals’ perspective.  Through her book, she illustrates how farm animals have feelings, emotions and unique personalities just like cats and dogs.

I had a chance to chat with Maya afterwards.  She talked about her passion for the animals, how she became involved with Farm Sanctuary in the creation of her book and what inspires her.
